Microcycas has only one species, calocoma, and is endemic to western Cuba. The diversity of Zamia on the island of Cuba suggests it to be the origin of cycads in the Caribbean and the presence of Microcycas there and only there confirms that Cuba is ground zero for cycads. The habitat of Microcycas has been greatly reduced and it’s thought there are no natural pollinators working to make viable seed. In cultivation, Microcycas is always thought to be a holy grail collector plant.
