Dioon vovidesii

Dioon vovidesii is a species separated from Dioon sonorense.  The specific epithet honors Andrew Vovides of Veracruz, Mexico.  Dioon sonorense is known from 8 or so populations that encompass distinct habitats.  Known as northern and southern populations the habitats have climates of open and arid versus wooded and seasonally dry respectively.  The locality Bacanora has been a well known, distinct form of sonorense that characterizes most of the species in cultivation.  Bacanora and the other northern populations are now called Dioon vovidesii.
