Dioon stevensonii

Dioon stevensonii was named after Dennis Stevenson and is the plant formerly known as Dioon roseophylla.  Plants occur in the Mexican state of Michoacán.  Reports are that one population is close to the road and often seeds have made their way to the United States.  Some plants once thought to be Dioon tomaselli are actually stevensonii.  Dioon stevensonii is easily distinguished when new leaves appear by the color with a brownish pink cast.  Plants in habitat often hold few leaves because of harsh environmental conditions in habitat.  Plants in cultivation can form attractive specimens but grow slow enough to tax the patience of most who try to grow them.
