Dioon species ‘Oaxacensis’ is currently described as a form of Dioon merolae.  There is some question as to whether the variation is enough to designate reclassification of these populations of plants into a new species or if they should be considered a form of Dioon merolae.  Plants are in the Mexican state of Oaxaca as the name suggests.  Plants are rare but can be found in cultivation.  This plant was important enough to be listed on the key to Dioon species and because of the popularity of Oaxaca this plant is often the topic of conversations about rare Dioons.
