Dioon sp. ‘Giant Purpusii’

Dioon purpusii was the first small leaved Dioon to be described.  Several populations are known with plants that are more or less uniform in appearance.  Nestled in the center of other populations of like plants is an anomaly.  The giant purpusii is a very robust plant with leaves roughly 25% larger than typical purpusii.  The tomentum on emerging leaves has a golden color.  The most distinct feature is that the tomentum isn’t only on the undersides of the leaves.  The top of each leaflet has a type of hair that resembles a spider web.  The leaflets of the giant purpusii have more spines typically.  The habitat is typical of other purpusii types.
