Coccothrinax guantanamensis is named for Guantanamo because of its proximity.  The palms can be seen from the coast if you look toward the mountains in the distance at higher elevations further inland than the coastal dogtooth limestone outcrops of the coastal species Coccothrinax torrida and Coccthrinax munizii..  Coccothrinax guantanamenis is easily within sight and pollinator insect range of populations of other Coccothrinax however hybrids are rare.
