Coccothrinax yunquensis

Coccothrinax yunquensis is a palm which is endemic to southeast Cuba. It is reported to be restricted to El Yunque, a limestone mountain and protected area in Guantánamo Province.  The palms are exposed at the peak sustaining strong winds and cloud most of the time.  Access requires admission into a protected area, hiking across a river and an uphill hike through disturbed areas under cultivation with Theobroma and then a rocky hike through incredible native vegation of lithophytic broadleaf pilea, ferns, bryophytes, and a gorgeous Zamia species that dangles off the rocks.  The hike also shows another Cuban palm Prestoea acuminata
