Coccothrinax spirituana

Coccothrinax spirituana is a newly described species by Celio Moya and named spirituana for the province of Sancti Spiritus.  The palms are locally abundant in a small area of serpentine soil.  The closest Coccothrinax is clarensis which is occasionally interspersed among this species.  The habitat is seasonally dry serpentine shrubland and gallery forest.  The Coccothrinax spirituana leaves appear blue even from a small size.  The color is blue gray because of hairs on the upper and lower surfaces as opposed to azul (macroglossa) which is blueish because of a wax.
